LANSA for Windows 9.0 introduced a new feature whereby you can upgrade your hardware key (also known as a dongle) without physically returning it to your regional distributor. In the LANSA for Windows 9.0 folder, under Setting and Administration, there is an icon to access this facility. However, there have been reports of users that have send their hardware key upgrade request to LANSA Licensing and when they upgrade their hardware key (using the upgrade code that is automatically sent back to the user), the license still comes up as invalid.

This is a known issue caused by the fact that the sentinel driver does not read certain hardware keys properly, especially really old hardware keys. (Generally, hardware keys of type PCXnnnnn cause this problem). What happens is that when you take the option to Read the Hardware Key, old hardware keys are not registered properly. However, the read operation does not get flagged as unsuccessful and so the request is forwarded to our license department, and thus a license is automatically issued based on an invalid hardware key serial number.

The workaround is as follows:

  1. Remove the hardware key and write down the serial number that is on this hardware key (it may be PCXnnnnnn).
  2. Now put the hardware key back into the parallel port and run the Hardware Key upgrade facility again.
  3. This time do not click the Read Hardware Key button but manually type in the code taken down in step 1.
  4. Specify the licenses you want enabled and submit your request again.
  5. You will get a mail back from lansalicense with the licenses to upgrade your hardware key.
